BREAKING: Assassination attempt on Pakistani former PM, many dead

MSNBC is reporting twin bomb blasts in Karachi, Pakistan, near the convoy in which former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was traveling.  There are apparently injuries on the scene, but no word as yet as to whether Bhutto herself was injured in the explosions.

Bhutto was the democratically-elected leader of Pakistan before she was deposed and forced into exile.  She returned to Pakistan today, vowing to end military rule in Pakistan.

UPDATE:  Sky News reports Bhutto is alive and unharmed.

UPDATE 2:  MSNBC reports "dozens dead."

UPDATE 3:  CNN reports 30 dead.

UPDATE 4:  MSNBC reports over 30 dead, more than 100 injured.  MSNBC claims al Qaeda had previously threatened to assassinate Bhutto.

UPDATE 5: CNN reports at least 35 dead.

UPDATE 6:  AFP reports at least 34 dead, Bhutto unhurt.  AFP describes the attack as "a massive car bomb."

UPDATE 7:  CNN reports 45 dead, cites Pakistani government officials describing the attack as a suicide bombing.

UPDATE 8:  AP reports 51 dead, 150+ injured.

UPDATE 9:  CNN reports 78 dead.

There are conflicting reports as to how much security was assigned to Bhutto's motorcade.  According to CNN, journalist Dan Rivers saw "remarkably little security" along the route, although Reuters reports 20,000 security personnel were deployed to provide protection.
